A top Sri Lanka military officer who issued a death threat in public to Tamil protestors in London had been allowed to work as a diplomat in the UK by the British government that failed to check his human rights record.brigadier_api_fernando_3

On Sri Lanka’s 70th Independence Day, 4 February 2018, Defence Attaché Brigadier Priyanka Fernando repeatedly mimed slitting throat gestures to hundreds of chanting Tamil protestors outside the High Commission in London. The video of him, in full military dress uniform, doing this in front of the High Commission building went viral.

Prince Edward and Countess to visit Sri Lanka

prince edward-aThe British High Commission in Colombo has confirmed that Prince Edward, Earl of Wessex, and the Countess of Wessex, will visit Sri Lanka from 31 January to 4 February 2018.


Their Royal Highnesses will represent Her Majesty the Queen at the 70th anniversary celebration of Sri Lanka’s independence on 4 February, a statement said.


“The Earl and Countess will travel to Colombo and other parts of Sri Lanka, celebrating the long-standing friendship between the two countries and shared interest in the Commonwealth, youth development and education.”


Their Royal Highnesses will meet participants in The Duke of Edinburgh’s International Award and young Sri Lankans selected as Queen’s Young Leaders, an initiative to recognise and celebrate exceptional young people across the Commonwealth.


The Earl and Countess will also meet representatives of a number of projects advancing causes they support through their work, including MENCAFEP, whose work to help differently-abled children and their families in the Nuwaraeliya, Trincomalee and Batticaloa Districts illustrates the close links between the people of Sri Lanka and the United Kingdom.


“As the United Kingdom looks forward to hosting the Commonwealth Heads of Government Meeting in April 2018, Their Royal Highnesses’ visit will highlight our countries’ shared ambition to ensure the Commonwealth is well-placed to help deliver a bright future for its Members’ citizens.”


The Prince Edward is the youngest child of Her Majesty The Queen and His Royal Highness The Duke of Edinburgh.  The Earl and Countess support Her Majesty in her official duties and undertake many public engagements each year in support of a wide range of charities and non-governmental organisations.

Electricity main panel board fired children evacuated in the hospital

hospital-aThe staff of the Pediatric ward of Batticaloa Teaching Hospital evacuated the entire ward before and danger could befall them by a fire caused by an electrical fault yesterday (15).

Director Batticaloa Teaching Hospital M.S. Ibralebbai said that the main panel box had caught fire and arrangements are being made to effect the necessary repairs.

As children and their care takers had been evacuated well in time no damaged were suffered by the person.

A protest by unguarded Railway level crossing employees in Batticaloa

The unguarded Railway level crossing employees staged a demonstration in front of the Batticaloa Railway Station requesting permanent appointment with slogans and placards yesterday (19).

Last 4 years they have been in employment but have not been made permanent. At the month they are being paid at the rate of Rupees 250 per day for 30 days only.
